The Center for Food Safety (CFS) has a long history fighting to stop the proliferation of genetically modified crops. In 2010 they battled Monsanto and the USDA at the U.S. Supreme Court, and were victorious in maintaining the four year ban on the planting and sale of GM alfalfa. CFS also fought successfully to uphold a ban on GM sugar beets; in November, a federal judge ordered the removal and destruction of illegally planted GM beets.

Some “non-profit” tax exempt 501(c)3 organizations have been known to engage in controlled opposition. For example, the Center for Food Safety (CFS) represented farmers in opposition to Monsanto in the Supreme Court GMO alfalfa case and in many other anti-GMO cases. While we have no way of knowing whether Andrew Kimbrell, the Executive Director of CFS and his brother George (of counsel) performed solid work in opposing Monsanto or whether they sandbagged the endeavor, there are reports that CFS and its parent company have taken in $1.75 million dollars from the John Merck Fund, which has ties to the Rockefeller Family Fund. Andrew Kimbrell of CFS filed a petition with the EPA to ban colloidal silver which is a natural antibiotic agent with many benefits that competes directly with Merck’s dubious pharmaceutical drugs. This organization has the appearance of working in the public’s interest, but in a separate action, it has operated in opposition to public benefit.

According to tax forms provided by Guidestar.org, the Center for Food Safety, a NPO whose lawyers have represented farmers against Monsanto, is a recipient of a grant from the Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors foundation for $75,000 in 2008 and the Center for Food Safety’s sister agency, the International Center for Technology Assessment, received $147,000 from the Rockefeller Family Fund in 2008.  This would appear to be a deep conflict of interest because the Rockefellers have been primary funders for advancing the genetically modified food revolution and agricultural manipulation as chronicled in F. William Engdahl’s book ‘Seeds of Desrtuction’.

Perhaps a more fitting name for the CFS (Center for Food Safety) would be Criminals for Frankenfood Supremacy.

In a cleverly worded, but profoundly misleading email sent to its customers last week, Whole Foods Market, while proclaiming their support for organics and “seed purity,” gave the green light to USDA bureaucrats to approve the “conditional deregulation” of Monsanto’s genetically engineered, herbicide-resistant alfalfa.  Beyond the regulatory euphemism of “conditional deregulation,” this means that WFM and their colleagues are willing to go along with the massive planting of a chemical and energy-intensive GE perennial crop, alfalfa; guaranteed to spread its mutant genes and seeds across the nation; guaranteed to contaminate the alfalfa fed to organic animals; guaranteed to lead to massive poisoning of farm workers and destruction of the essential soil food web by the toxic herbicide, Roundup; and guaranteed to produce Roundup-resistant superweeds that will require even more deadly herbicides such as 2,4 D to be sprayed on millions of acres of alfalfa across the U.S.

Always on the terror streak, the mainstream media is now warning Americans that terrorists may strike the food supply by dumping poison into restaurant salad bars and buffets, for example. CBS News broke the story, quoting anonymous “intelligence” sources who insist that terrorists might use ricin or cyanide to poison foods in salad bars.

I have news for CBS, the federal government, and the terrorists: If you really want to poison the U.S. food supply, just use aspartame. It causes neurological disorders and yet remains perfectly legal to dump into foods such as diet sodas and children’s medicines. You don’t even have to dump it into the food supply in secret, either: You can do it right out in full view of the public. Heck, you can even list this chemical right on the ingredients label!

Or get into the MSG business. MSG, which is often hidden on “natural” foods under an ingredient called yeast extract, is a potent neurotoxin that promotes obesity and even cancer, according to some experts. Feed people enough MSG and they’ll probably die of cancer sooner or later, and that counts toward the goal of terrorism too, doesn’t it?

If you really want to get nasty and up the body count, start a hot dog company and dump sodium nitrite into your processed meat like all the other hot dog companies do. Seriously, if you want to kill Americans, all you really need to do is keep supporting conventional medicine and the FDA with its do-nothing position on dangerous chemicals that threaten the health of Americans right now. The latest batch of diplomatic cables released by Wikileaks reveals what can only be characterized as a U.S.-led conspiracy to force GMOs onto European countries by making those countries pay a steep price if they resist.

The cable reveals the words ofCraig Stapleton, the US ambassador to France, who was pushing the commercial interests of the biotech industry by attempting to force GMOs into France. In his own words (below), he expresses his frustration with the idea that France might pass environmental laws that would hamper the expansion of GMOs:

“Europe is moving backwards not forwards on this issue with France playing a leading role, along with Austria, Italy and even the [European] Commission… Moving to retaliation will make clear that the current path has real costs to EU interests and could help strengthen European pro-biotech voice.”

Gregory Jaffe: Last and perhaps most concerning, the committee’s supposed consumer advocate is a lawyer (not a scientist) representing the Center for Science in the Public Interest, an organization that favors the use of agricultural biotechnology. Like Van Eeenennaam, he has served on AC21, from 2004 to 2008. His views can be seen in a paper he wrote called “Creating the Proper Environment for Acceptance of Agricultural Biotechnology.” In it he states CSPI’s unequivocal support for agricultural biology and his belief that genetically engineered crops have increased productivity and farmer income while reducing pesticide use, and that GE crops are safe for humans and the environment. Each of these conclusions is controversial, and credible evidence abounds disproving each, give or take the claim on farmer income.

Jaffe completes the paper by tackling what he sees as the true threat of biotechnology — public acceptance of GE foods. He calls for “a strong, but not stifling, regulatory system.” He also calls for the regulatory system to be “transparent and participatory” with “independent risk assessment research that informs the public and regulators.” Sounds good, but a full reading of the paper makes it apparent that perhaps his interest in regulation is intended more as a public show to convince the public to eat GE foods, than a true review of the safety of GE products. In a more recent article, “Questions About Genetically Engineered Animals,” Jaffe expresses optimism that genetically engineered animals, including the AquAdvantage salmon, will provide environmental or health benefits.

Gregory Jaffe was also imported into the committee as their supposed consumer advocate. In reality, he is with the pro-GMO Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI), an organization that consistently ignores the mounting evidence of adverse health impacts from GE crops. Jaffe even filed a complaint to the FDA in 2001 complaining of companies that label their products as non-GMO. What further qualified Jaffe for his committee position was his published article Questions About Genetically Engineered Animals, where he touts the environmental benefits of AquAdvantage salmon.

Gregory Jaffe is the Director of the Project on Biotechnology for the Center for Science in the Public Interest (“CSPI”), an advocacy and educational organization that focuses on nutrition and health, food safety, alcohol policy, and sound science. In the early 1990s, while at the Department of Justice, he advised the Assistant Attorney General on biotechnology issues and worked with a federal interagency committee addressing biotechnology policy.  He is currently a member of the Pew Initiative on Food and Biotechnology’s Stakeholders Forum and was a member of the University of Pennsylvania Bioethics Center’s GMO Consumer Values Panel.  He has published articles on agricultural biotechnology in the Christian Science Monitor, the Food and Drug Law Institute’s Update magazine, and the Environmental Law Institute’s Environmental Forum Magazine.  He also has spoken at over a dozen conferences addressing agricultural biotechnology issues, both in the United States and abroad.  He is a recognized expert on the U.S. regulatory structure for agricultural biotechnology as well as consumer issues pertaining to agricultural biotechnology.

Ban HFCS or Tax HFCS: Pick Your Poison

On one hand, if the government were to ban high-fructose corn syrup, production of the mercury-containing toxic GMO sweetener would just be moved out of the country. The government would most likely ship the HFCS in for CIA-run food producers who would produce HFCS-containing food to be sold by black-market underground dealers who would then participate with the CIA and the federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies in “HFCS raids” where people are SWAT-teamed, tasered, and shipped off to glorified concentration camps.

On the other hand, if the government were to tax high-fructose corn syrup, the tax would only benefit the criminal banksters – namely the Rockefellers – who created the obesity epidemic in the first place with all the aspartame and MSG and GMO foods (including HFCS).
