Sonic to phase-in cage-free eggs

The Humane Society of the United States has praised Sonic’s new policy for its improvements in animal welfare in its supply chain. Last week, the HSUS announced that it waspurchasing stock in QSR Jack in the Box and casual-dining hybrid Steak ‘N Shake in order to influence their animal welfare policies.

Nation’s Restaurant News reported that Sonic has been working primarily with PETA for the past 18 to 24 months to develop the new policy. According to the story, HSUS owns stock in Sonic as well as McDonald’s Corp., Tim Hortons Inc. and Wendy’s/Arby’s Group Inc.

Activist group is buying shares of Tyson Foods, Hormel and Denny’s in bid to reach shareholders.

Animal rights group PETA — People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals — said it is upping the ante against food companies and restaurant chains by buying their shares and taking its animal anti-cruelty campaign directly to the shareholders.

Calling it a “reinvigorated strategy,” the agency said for the first time it is vigorously purchasing stock in the leading meat suppliers such as Hormel Foods, Tyson Foods, Pilgrim’s Pride and dining chains Denny’s Restaurants, Outback Steakhouse, Chili’s parent Brinker International and Applebee’s.

“We’re taking on Wall Street,” PETA spokesman Bruce Friedrich told CNN/Money. “We’re buying 50 percent over the minimum number of shares required to submit a shareholder resolution.”

Interesting strategy PeTA so let me see how this works; you accept donations to save the animals & protect their rights, then you purchase stock in companies that serve and eat them.

This is done so you then can form a shareholder resolution to attempt change while you collect the quarterly benefits of your stock vested in restaurants that serve meat. That would be a brilliant move if you were able to by 51% of the stock in the company,  but a fairly useless and wasted purchase for animal rights to purchase a number to simply submit a shareholder resolution.

PeTA started buying shares in the meat and restaurant industry in 2003, this is what they owned at that date.

Over the last month, PETA said it has acquired 150 shares of Austin, Minn.-based Hormel Foods, the leading processor of turkey and pork; 240 shares of Springdale, Ark.-based No. 1 chicken producer Tyson Foods and 260 shares of Texas-based No. 2 poultry producer Pilgrim’s Pride.

PETA now also owns 11,000 shares of casual dining chain Denny’s and 110 shares of Chili’s parent Brinker International, and will acquire stock in Outback Steakhouse and Applebee’s.

Let me summarize first lady Michelle Obama’s anti-obesity agenda: Shed as I say, not as I gain. While she crusades for organic foods and puts government pressure on corporations to stop marketing fast food and junk food to children, Mrs. Obama herself profited from the very same processed food industry she now demonizes.

In June 2005, a few months after her husband was elected to the U.S. Senate, Mrs. Obama hustled a seat on the corporate Board of Directors of TreeHouse Foods, Inc. Despite zero experience, the food-processing company put her on its audit and nominating and corporate governance committees. For her on-the-job training and the privilege of putting her name and face on their literature, the company forked over $45,000 in 2005 and $51,200 in 2006 to Mrs. Obama — as well as 7,500 TreeHouse stock options worth more than $72,000 for each year.

The chairman of the TreeHouse Foods board, Sam K. Reed, was a top executive at Kellogg’s and Keebler Foods, home of that great menace to children, the Keebler Elf. Before that, he headed up Mother’s Cake and Cookie Company. The conglomerate sells cheese sauces, Cremora non-dairy creamer, instant soup, puddings and powdered soft drink mixes. Hardly the stuff of Mrs. Obama’s new vision of nutritional paradise. TreeHouse is also a leading supplier of pickles used in the burgers of evil fast food chain McDonald’s — exactly the kind of corporate restaurants Mrs. Obama is now targeting in her war on urban “food deserts.”

The corporation-bashing Mrs. Obama would have continued raking in her TreeHouse cash if it hadn’t been for her husband’s pesky pledge to pander to Big Labor and swear off Wal-Mart. The retail giant, you see, happened to be TreeHouse’s biggest customer. And Wal-Mart is to Big Labor as sunshine is to Dracula.

Soda industry front group attempting to have this blog discredited as “industry propaganda”

Just checked my blog tracker software and found that the National Soft Drink Association – a soft drink industry front group funded by Coca-Cola and PepsiCo – were reading my post about how the Rockefeller banksters were forcing their puppet Michael Jacobson of CSPI to push their “soda tax” propaganda. I think they are planning on using my research which I have posted on this blog and posting said research – with their own spin, of course – on their website, or in news print, or as talking points on news shows in an attempt to discredit this blog as “industry propaganda”.

(CNSNews.com) – New federal regulations issued this week stipulate that the electronic health records–that all Americans are supposed to have by 2014 under the terms of the stimulus law that President Barack Obama signed last year–must record not only the traditional measures of height and weight, but also the Body Mass Index: a measure of obesity.

The obesity-rating regulation states that every American’s electronic health record must: “Calculate body mass index. Automatically calculate and display body mass index (BMI) based on a patient’s height and weight.”

The law also requires that these electronic health records be available–with appropriate security measures–on a national exchange.

The new regulations are one of the first steps towards the government’s goal of universal adoption of electronic health records (EHRs) by 2014, as outlined in the 2009 economic stimulus law.  Specifically, the regulations issued on Tuesday by Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius and Dr. David Blumenthal, the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology, define the “meaningful use” of electronic records. Under the stimulus law, health care providers–including doctors and hospitals–must establish “meaningful use” of EHRs by 2014 in order to qualify for federal subsidies. After that, they will be subjected to penalties in the form of diminished Medicare and Medicaid payments for not establishing “meaningful use” of EHRs.

Section 3001 of the stimulus law says: “The National Coordinator shall, in consultation with other appropriate Federal agencies (including the National Institute of Standards and Technology), update the Federal Health IT Strategic Plan (developed as of June 3, 2008) to include specific objectives, milestones, and metrics with respect to the following: (i) The electronic exchange and use of health information and the enterprise integration of such information.‘‘(ii) The utilization of an electronic health record for each person in the United States by 2014.”

Under this mandate in the stimulus law, Secretary Sebelius issued a regulation–developed by Dr. Blumenthal–that requires that all EHRs keep track of a person’s Body Mass Index (BMI) score. Body Mass Index is a ratio between a person’s weight and height, and is used to determine whether or not someone is overweight or obese. It is the preferred method of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for measuring obesity.

Michelle Obama has made dealing with the problem of childhood obesity the main theme of her term as First Lady.

According to the CDC,  “BMI provides a reliable indicator of body fatness for most people and is used to screen for weight categories that may lead to health problems.”

A person’s BMI score is used as a tool to screen for obesity or excessive body fat that could lead to other health problems. While it does not actually measure body fat directly, according to CDC, the BMI scores generally correlate with a person’s body fat percentage.

The new regulations also stipulate that the new electronic records be capable of sending public health data to state and federal health agencies such as HHS and CDC. The CDC, which calls American society “obesogenic” – meaning that American society itself promotes obesity – collects BMI scores from state health agencies every year to monitor obesity nationwide.

“Electronically record, retrieve, and transmit syndrome based public health surveillance information to public health agencies,” the regulations read.

With the spread of electronic health records, the CDC apparently will be able to collect such data more efficiently and with greater accuracy because the electronic record keeping systems can send the data automatically, eliminating the need for government – both state and federal – to keep, send, and process physical records.

Osteopath Joseph Mercola has plenty to sell you on his website. He’s also known for, as a Business Week commentator put it, “slick promotion, clever use of information, and scare tactics” that hearken back to the “unfortunate tradition made famous by the old-time snake oil salesmen of the 1800s.” If that sounds harsh, consider a Mercola article from Saturday perpetuating myths about high fructose corn syrup.

Mercola, who is not a medical doctor, starts with the good ol’ fable that corn sugar is a “prime factor” behind the obesity epidemic. Right? Wrong, according to a set of five studies published last winter finding that corn sugar is not a unique cause of obesity. Even the original speculator of the corn sugar-obesity theory has since recanted his mistake.

Ready for more? Mercola says high fructose corn syrup is twice as sweet as other sugars. Wrong again: High fructose corn syrup is designed to be exactly as sweet as table sugar. He also claims fructose can harm your liver, while omitting a key fact: High fructose corn syrup isn’t pure fructose; it’s not even “high” in fructose. Corn sugar is 55 percent fructose, compared to 50 percent for table sugar. (Some high fructose corn syrup—the 42 percent variety—actually has less fructose than table sugar.) The studies Mercola alludes to tested pure fructose—not high fructose corn syrup—and fed it to subjects in unrealistically high quantities.

Why is Joseph Mercola freaking his followers out? It could have something to do with his own pricey blend of “Pure Gold Raw Honey,” which he’s more than happy to sell you. (Ironically, the sugars in honey have basically the same chemical composition as high fructose corn syrup.)

The “Quackwatch” organization took a look at Mercola’s pseudo-science (and his clever “alternative” food marketing), and wrote that many of hiswritings “make unsubstantiated claims and clash with those of leading medical and public health organizations.” For examples, see the American Medical Association and American Dietetic Association, which advise the public that high fructose corn syrup and table sugar are nutritionally equivalent.

Let’s see … Who should we trust? Tens of thousands of doctors and dieticians, or a honey salesman? Sometimes the sweetest questions are the simplest ones.

President Obama has stated that he is happy to consider bailing out the corporate media, expressing concerns that alternative internet based news outlets will grow in popularity as a result of the downfall of newspapers.

Obama told editors of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and Toledo Blade that preserving the print media is “critical to the health of our democracy”.

“I am concerned that if the direction of the news is all blogosphere, all opinions, with no serious fact-checking, no serious attempts to put stories in context, that what you will end up getting is people shouting at each other across the void but not a lot of mutual understanding,” Obama said.

He also indicated that readers should be made to pay for online news content in the near future:

“What I hope is that people start understanding if you’re getting your newspaper over the Internet, that’s not free and there’s got to be a way to find a business model that supports that.” he said.

Over the past year, scores of newspapers have gone out of business or shifted to online only output, due to the rise of the alternative media and the resulting loss of ad revenue. Several large newspaper corporations have filed for bankruptcy, including the Tribune Co., owner of the Chicago Tribune and the Los Angeles Times.

Obama said he “would be happy to look at” legislation aimed at providing newspapers tax-breaks if they were to restructure as 50 (c) (3) educational corporations. Democratic Senator Ben Cardin has introduced a bill in this vain titled “The Newspaper Revitalization Act.”

Critics may point out that, far from being “critical” to democracy, a bailed out government subsidized media is the very antithesis of a “free press”.

Government Banking and Government Motors would effectively be joined by the Government Press if bailouts were to be granted.

Bailing out the corporate media would once again constitute rewarding outdated and failing monopolies with more taxpayer dollars, thus punishing innovative forward thinking competition.

Furthermore, there is absolutely no basis for bailing out the newspapers, given that they employ less than one percent of the labor force in the United States.

The dinosaur corporate media is dying because it has proven itself to be almost wholly untrustworthy, acting as an unquestioning mouthpiece for the establishment.

Denouncing all blog based media as unreliable or without context is laughable in the face of the mainstream media’s recent track record.

Please take action to ensure our children’s safety, for they can not protect themselves.

What first alarmed farmers was the massive amount of PUS in the milk but Monsanto and the FDA still had no concerns by stating that the PUS was not harmful to be ingested by consumers!

If you have little children, at least feed them certified BGH free Milk, Organic Milk or Organic/BGM free milk equivalent like Organic soy milk.
